THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Environmental Services Supervisor, the Environmental Services Aide plays an essential role in ensuring GBGH is maintained as a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors. In this role the EVS Aide duties will include cleaning and infection prevention as well as, dusting, sweeping, mopping and buffing of floors, garbage collection, cleaning of washrooms, monitoring and restocking inventory in public areas and clinics, operation of housekeeping equipment and the replacement of other work assignments as required. Individuals will also be trained to do discharge and isolation cleaning of patient rooms, as well as cleaning patient rooms, common areas and washrooms. The EVS Aide will also assist with other duties related to this position as required.

Job Requirements:

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform routine cleaning (surface disinfection, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, etc.) of all areas of the facility including but not limited to occupied patient rooms, clinic areas, nursing stations, waiting rooms, lobbies, washrooms, offices, kitchens, operating rooms, utility rooms, corridors, morgues, equipment, and public areas in accordance with quality standards, procedures, and training. Replenishing washroom supplies.
  • Removal and handling recycling, compost, garbage, biomedical and cytotoxic waste in accordance with procedures and legislation.
  • May also be trained on the use of motorized cleaning equipment and performing floor care.
  • Attend staff meetings, safety huddles, education, and training as required.
  • Utilize cleaning chemicals and equipment (such as ladders, mops, vacuums and some motorized cleaning equipment) in accordance with training and procedures.
  • Wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and uniform as required.
  • Perform other duties in support of the housekeeping function; performing cross-functional and other duties as assigned and/or required.
  • Perform simple repetitive tasks in maintaining an assigned area of the hospital in a sanitary, orderly, and attractive condition.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies:

  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting would be preferred
  • Ability to set priorities, recognize problems and plan and schedule work effectively
  • Proven customer orientation to work with clients, visitors, staff, and as a member of a team
  • Ability to work independently, following specific procedures and schedules
  • Must be able to carry out the use of heavy equipment for deep scrubbing of floors
  • Must be physically fit to carry out bending, lifting and extended periods of walking or standing and ladder climbing
  • Must possess English language verbal communications skills and literacy skills sufficient to understand verbal and written instructions and to read product labels and procedure manuals
  • Proficiency in both official languages (English and French) will be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history is a requirement of this position
  • Basic proficiency in using computerized technology, including tablets is essential for this role to track and manage assignments efficiently

HOURS OF WORK
Permanent Part Time - Shifts include days, evenings, nights, and weekends. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the SEIU collective agreement
