Job Requirements of Respiratory Therapist - Part Time:
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, record of experience and academic preparation:
- Current certificate of registration in good standing with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario and the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists.
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (A.C.L.S.).
- Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
- Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
- Recent experience in an acute care facility including ED and ICU.
- Proven ability to thrive in fast-paced and dynamic environments.
- Strong dedication to providing exceptional customer service.
- Effective communicator skilled in engaging patients, families, colleagues, and the interprofessional team through both oral and written communication.
- Experienced in working both independently and collaboratively within a team setting.
- Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
- Committed to ongoing professional growth and the development of oneself and others.
- Committed to upholding the GBGH Code of Conduct by consistently demonstrating respectful, professional, and appropriate behaviour in all interactions.
- Consistent record of satisfactory work performance and attendance.

COMPENSATION

- Hourly rate of pay is $38.35 – $53.28, up to an additional 14% in lieu of benefits and 6% in lieu of vacation to start.

Permanent Part Time opportunity and must be available to work shifts including days, evenings, nights and weekends. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the OPSEU collective agreement.

THE OPPORTUNITY
In our Respiratory Therapist role, you will assess and treat patients with respiratory and cardiopulmonary conditions, ensuring they receive the highest quality of care. You will conduct diagnostic tests, develop and implement personalized treatment plans, and administer therapies such as oxygen and mechanical ventilation. Monitoring patient progress and documenting all care in the EMR system is essential. By collaborating with healthcare professionals, you will optimize patient outcomes and educate patients and their families on effective respiratory management. Additionally, you will maintain and calibrate respiratory equipment, contributing to a safe and efficient care environment.
Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:
- Evaluate patients’ respiratory conditions through physical examinations and diagnostic tests, including spirometry and arterial blood gas analysis.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans in consultation with physicians.
- Administer respiratory therapies, such as aerosol medications and chest physiotherapy.
- Operate and maintain respiratory therapy equipment, ensuring proper sterilization and functionality.
- Educate patients and their families about respiratory conditions, equipment usage, and home care practices.
- Provide emergency respiratory care, including CPR, and respond to respiratory emergencies.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Maintain accurate patient records and report any changes in conditions to medical staff.
- Stay updated with advancements in respiratory care and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
- Assist in training and mentoring new respiratory therapists and healthcare staff.
