THE OPPORTUNITY

As a member of the healthcare interdisciplinary team, the Laboratory Technician 4 is responsible for performing detailed functions to support patient care and facilitate the execution and reporting of laboratory tests at Georgian Bay General Hospital. In addition to these responsibilities and in close the Laboratory Technician 4 is responsible for providing guidance in their area and the day-to-day operations to adequately meet the demands of the area. The LT4 is responsible for, but not limited to: instrument maintenance and QC, all pre-analytical work including loading samples, performing serology testing (no interpretation), and urinalysis excluding microscopic analysis. The incumbent performs only those functions for which training has been completed and competency assessed. Depending on operational requirements may rotate through different specified job functions

Job Requirements:

REQUIREMENTS

  • Medical Laboratory Technician Certification or equivalent
  • Successful completion of relevant accredited courses along with the MLPAO certification (or equivalent)
  • Current experience (3 -5 years) recent experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of and participation in quality improvement initiatives
  • Demonstrated skill in coaching/teaching team members and new staff
  • Demonstrated positive attitude
  • Demonstrated ability to assess core laboratory needs and perform work or request assistance as necessary
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional practice and self-development
  • Is an advocate for best possible patient care and laboratory outcomes
  • A strong critical thinker with demonstrated judgment and ethical decision making skills
  • Effective communication, collaboration, and facilitation skills to problem solve and resolve conflict
  • Strong written documentation skills and verbal communication skills that are clear, thorough, concise, accurate, and timely
  • Accountable for own actions and decisions; making decisions within the scope of the position and referring issues/problems/events to the appropriate person as required
  • Self-directed with the ability to organize, plan, prioritize, and multi-task
  • Demonstrated excellent work performance and attendance history
  • Carry out work in a manner so as not to create a safety hazard to yourself or others
  • Keep tools and equipment in good condition; report defects in workplace equipment immediately.
  • Maintaining appropriate levels of supplies-receiving inventory & performing stock counts
  • Performing equipment maintenance including temperature recording and minor repairs to equipment, as required in all areas
  • Set up of serology rests (occult blood, pregnancy tests, rapid tests, RSV, Flu A &B, rapid Strep)
  • Accession all types of lab specimens into the LIS-Receive, identify, separate, record and distribute biological specimens for analysis in house; or refer to reference lab;
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history

  • Experience with Meditech Expanse system

HOURS OF WORK

Permanent Casual. Mainly call in and vacation relief. Must be available to work shifts including days, evenings, nights and weekends. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the OPSEU collective agreement.
